All Children's Theatre "All Cast" Shows
Last season, the All Children's Theatre (A.C.T.) began casting all participants who attend auditions*. Of course, the theatre will still conduct regular auditions and callbacks to determine what part each child receives, but the sting of not being cast at all is removed! The theatre will often double-cast these shows to accommodate the number of children auditioning.
*The theatre reserves the right not to cast auditionees who have excessive conflicts (see conflict policy) and/or have had recent disciplinary problems.
Guidelines
Also refer to Keys to a Successful Audition
The grade requirements must be met as of the first day of rehearsal.
All auditionees must bring a headshot or photo. It is very difficult for directors to remember faces with such large numbers of auditionees! Resumes are recommended but not required.
All auditionees must prepare a one-minute monologue and register in advance by calling the theatre box office. For musicals, please also prepare a one-minute selection from a Broadway-style song and bring either the appropriate sheet music or an instrumental cd/cassette. An accompanist will be provided. Singing a cappella or alongside of a recorded voice is strongly discouraged. For help picking audition material, email our Education Director.
There is an instructional fee for children currently enrolled in grades 2-12 cast in any production at THT. These fees vary depending on the production company and are not due at the time of the audition, but must be paid prior to the first rehearsal. Fees are:
- $125 for All Children's Theatre productions (this fee includes an additional costuming surcharge, t-shirt and poster!)
- $100 for LCTC shows (this fee includes enrollment in weekly actor -development workshops taught by professional actors in the cast)
- $75 for ACT Touring Teens productions.
Please contact the box office beginning TWO WEEKS prior to an audition to begin registering and to find out the latest casting information.
Callbacks are generally held on the Thursday evening or Saturday morning immediately following an audition. Callback sheets and final cast lists will be posted here and near the cast & crew door. Please do not call the box office for this information!
It is always a good idea to check the Web site for additional audition and casting information.
Please do not call the box office for this information!
Conflict Policy
It is so easy to want the best of everything for your child! All too often, however, it is possible to involve children in more activities than they can adequately commit to. Families should take a serious look at the level of commitment required by participation in a Town Hall Theatre production and weigh it against the possible demands of extracurricular activities, family vacations and schoolwork.
It is very difficult to produce a quality show when directors do not have consistency in rehearsals. The staff simply does not have time to re-teach blocking and dances that they have missed. Part of THT's commitment to you is to provide a professional learning experience and this is difficult to accomplish if attendance is poor. Every cast member is important and there is a hole when they are missing. This is why we require all participants to sign an "Actor's Contract" outlining the responsibilities that go with accepting a part. Please read our conflict policy and look at the dates we have posted in order to make a well-informed decision before participating in one of our productions.
- Conflicts must be submitted at the auditions. We do not accept more than three days of missed rehearsals total. Parents, bring your planners!
- All conflicts must be handed in by final Callbacks.
- After casting has been finalized, additional conflicts or new conflicts are considered unexcused absences, and may lead to being dropped from the show.
- We accept two unexcused absences and we do keep track of unexcused absences. We reserve the right to not cast a participant if that person has an excessive number of conflicts or has demonstrated poor discipline in recent participation.
- Participants may have NO conflicts during tech week, (the last week of rehearsals before the show opens.) Absences at that time may be considered grounds for dismissal. Conflicts during the week before tech week are also extremely difficult, and strongly discouraged.
ACTING ONE: Building Character on Stage
Completion of our core introductory skills class, Acting One is a prerequisite for being cast in any Town Hall Theatre production for all children in grades 2-7. This policy insures that everyone in a THT production not only shares the same basic theatre vocabulary and knowledge, but also understands the responsibilities of an actor from rehearsal to performance.
Our goal is for every child to have a rewarding experience rehearsing/performing a show, much of which is dependent on knowing what is expected of them as a performer.
Exceptions may be made by the Education Director for students demonstrating extensive performance experience. Candidates must pass a basic skills test and provide two letters of recommendation to be considered.
PERFORMANCE INSTRUCTORS: Training Young Actors
The theatre hires 2-4 professionally-trained adult performance instructors for each of the Landmark Children's Theatre Company productions offered during the season. In addition to performing featured roles in each show, performance instructors serve as mentors; leading daily warm-up exercises, running lines and reviewing blocking with young performers. They also teach a series of actor development workshops each Saturday morning throughout the rehearsal process. These sessions focus on core disciplines such as voice, movement and characterization, as well as teaching show-specific topics such as stage combat, specialty makeup and puppetry.
General Adult Auditions
Each season, Town Hall Theatre holds general auditions to fill volunteer adult roles and performance instructor positions in all scheduled Landmark Children's Theatre Company productions. As part of this process, the theatre also attends the League of Cincinnati Theatres' annual unified auditions. To audition, candidates must prepare EITHER
- Two (2) Contrasting One- Minute Monologues; OR
- One (1) One-Minute Monologue and one (1) One-Minute Selection from a Broadway Song.
